Infertility can be shattering for many people. For a lot of couples, it can be crippling to find out that they’re unable to conceive children of their own. It’s not uncommon to feel like a victim. All those days growing up, dreaming of having a family of your own.

This is not the end though, there are many options and solutions. Starting a family is always possible, even if you’re infertile. On the other side of the coin, some may even end up seeing it as a blessing, given the number of children in this world that are in desperate need of a family.

Infertility isn’t always final either. In some cases, it can be treatable. Especially in males. Having said this, getting pregnant isn’t easy as some may think. It can take up to 2 years for some couples to have a child, even if they are healthy. However, if you’re unable to fall pregnant after a year, you may want to consult your doctor.

Speaking of doctors, let’s look at some of the signs and symptoms of infertility.

What are the symptoms of infertility?

Clearly, the main symptom/sign of infertility is not being able to fall pregnant after trying for a year. It gets a lot more complex than this so let’s break it up into signs for women and men.

Infertility In Women:

If you’re a woman and you notice changes in your menstrual cycle and ovulation, it may be signs of disease related to infertility:

  • No periods – either your periods stop suddenly, or you’ve never had one before.
  • Painful periods – Experiencing any pain in your back or pelvis, any signs of cramping.
  • Abnormal periods – heavier or lighter bleeding than usual.
  • Irregular periods – the amount of days in between each period is sporadic (irregular).

In some cases, infertility in women may be related to hormonal problems:

  • Sudden hair loss
  • Sudden weight gain without a change in diet
  • Changes in the state of your skin (increased acne, rashes, patches.)
  • A lack of sex drive or desire for intercourse
  • Dark hair growth on your upper lip, chest or face

According to specialists, additional symptoms in women may include:

  • Sudden milky white discharge from nipples which are unrelated to breastfeeding
  • Pain during intercourse

Infertility In Men:

Symptoms of infertility can be indistinct. Meaning that males may not notice such symptoms until they are trying to have a child. Causes may also affect these symptoms, they include:

  • A sudden change in hair growth
  • A lack of desire for sexual intercourse
  • Any pain, lumps or swelling of the testes
  • Ejaculation or erection difficulties
  • Shrunken testes (firm)

Alternative Causes of Infertility

Microwaving your food in plastic containers:

According to Dr. Nitasha Gupta, IVF expert from Indira IVF Hospital, heating your food up by use of a plastic container in a microwave may have serious effects on your health and may cause infertility:

“The most hazardous chemicals in plastic containers are bisphenol A, commonly known as BPA, and phthalate. The BPA we ingest gets into our bloodstream and may lead to a series of problems like infertility, hormonal changes, changes in gender traits and even several types of cancers. They also have side effects on animals causing testicular cancer, genital deformations, low sperm counts, and infertility in several species, including polar bears, deer, whales, and others. The disturbing truth is that heat transfers the chemicals in plastic very effectively into your food.”

Junk food:

According to Professor Clair Roberts, lead author of a study that involved the diet history of 5,598 pregnant women across the UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand, women that consume a lot of junk food are double the amount more likely to suffer from infertility issues.

How to treat infertility

There are several different treatments that can improve your chances of getting pregnant. Again, it’s better to divide it into women and men.

Treating Infertility In Women:

  • Surgery – the removal of tissue that may be hindering fertility (endometriosis)
  • Fertility drugs and hormones – there are many (best to consult a specialist) but they are used to assist women with restoring the level of hormones and to help them ovulate

Treating Infertility In Men:

  • Medication – a wide variety treating ejaculation or erectile dysfunction
  • Hormone treatments – to assist restoring a healthy level of hormones
  • Surgery – when the causes are a blockage in the vas deferens or if there is a widening of the veins in the scrotum
  • Antibiotics – these treat infections in the male reproductive organs
